After long and distinguished service the steam loco is fast disappearing from the Liverpool waterfront. On the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board, Avonsides were decidedly the most popular and we know of at least thirty-three. No less than 26 of these were of the makers‘ class B3. No.1 (Avonside 1465) [top] is one of the four B2 class, with No.10 (Avonside 1571) [middle] a B3. Dingle Oil Jetty is still the preserve of No.43 (Barclay 1573) [bottom], the surviving fireless locomotive. The photographs were taken on 21st May 1962.
