Industrial Railway Society Publications

The IRS publishes a wide range of books about industrial railways, both in the United Kingdom and overseas. The Regional Handbooks were the first books that the Society produced, in it's very early days, and these have now grown greatly from the slim little booklets of those early years. In the 1960's we brought out the first EL Handbook, to provide a more up-to-date guide for the enthusiast looking for the existing industrial and preservation railways of the UK, and this is now in its 14th edition. Over the years we have also published a number of other books about specialised subjects, such as a particular industrial system, or locomotive builder.

The IRS does not just limit its interest to the industrial railways of the UK and Foreign books started in 1956 with the first of a series on the industrials of France, which is now in its second generation. Since then the coverage has spread to other countries around the world such as Germany and Cuba, with more to follow. And finally there is the Society's magazine, the Industrial Railway Record, with its range of articles on all sorts of industrial railway subjects.

Note: Many former Society publications (books & the 'Record') are now out of print, but we do have some good second hand copies available of some of these. If you are interested please make enquiries by email to Bob Darvill (for the 'Record') or Andrew Smith (for books).

Update Lists: The IRS frequently publishes special 'Bulletins' containing additions and corrections to its historical handbooks, to enable members to keep these books up to date with the latest information. These 'Amendment Bulletins' are sent out to members along with the normal 'Bulletin', as a normal part of the membership service. Sets of these are also available for purchase by non-members while stocks last. These are the 'Update Lists' mentioned in the entries for various publications.

If you are ordering books as a result of seeing this page, please let us know, so we can get some idea how successful it is.

There is only room here to list those books published by the IRS, but our book sales service can also supply a large number of railway books from other publishers. Why not ask for a list?

Photocopy Service

Important: It is with great regret that we have to announce that John Powell, the Society's Photocopying Officer, has passed away. The Society's photocopy service is therefore suspended until further notice.

In the last 50 years the IRS has published many books and issues of the 'Record' that are now out of print. However we can supply photocopies of most of these publications, and their related amendment 'Bulletins', at reasonable prices. There are too many items available to list here, but you can download a complete list in the form of an Adobe Acrobat 'pdf' file. Acrobat Readers are available for most operating systems, and can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website.
